EDUCATIONAL PERSPECTIVE

Hungarian Higher Education has been representing academic excellence for more than 600 years. The first university was founded in 1367 in Pécs, which is located in the Southern region of Hungary. Today, there are 65 higher education institutions (29 public and 37 private) in Hungary, ranging from minor universities of applied sciences to top research universities. Internationalization is becoming an essential part of their development strategies: they offer 550 courses in English, German, French and other languages.

Hungarian institutions achieved a high position in many university rankings, and Hungarian degrees are of internationally recognised quality. The membership of the Hungarian Accreditation Committee in charge of providing quality assurance and evaluating education and research programmes at higher education institutions was renewed by the European Association of Quality Assurance and in the International Network for Quality Assurance Agencies in Higher Education in 2015. Hungary followed the recommendation of the European Parliament to establish its National Qualifications Framework in 2008.

Stipendium Hungaricum scholarship

Stipendium Hungaricum, the Hungarian Government’s most prestigious higher education scholarship programme, offers a wide range of courses for high-achieving international students with an excellent academic track record. The scholarship aims to support the internationalization of Hungarian higher education and its constant development, strengthen the international relations of the academic and research community, and promote the good reputation and competitiveness of Hungarian higher education worldwide.

The programme, founded by the Hungarian Government in 2013, is supervised by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade and managed by the Tempus Public Foundation.

It is based on bilateral education agreements between Hungary and the governments of the sending countries. It is available on five continents in over 90 countries, attracting tens of thousands of international students each year. Applicants are offered around 800 full degree programmes, covering all higher education fields at all degree levels, including part-time and doctoral programmes.

The fact that over 93% of our scholarship holders would choose Hungary again is a testament to the programme’s quality and motivates us to further expand the scope of the scholarship in the future.

LIVING COST

You will need at least 500 Euros per month to cover the costs of accommodation including utilities, pay for local transport, and even go out occasionally. This amount should cover the costs of rent, utilities, shopping for everyday items and local transport – though not the tuition fee. As the rent constitutes a significant item of your total expenditure, the final amount will depend on whether you rent a room, a flat, or whether you are accommodated in a student hostel. There are regional differences in this amount, since life in Budapest is more expensive than in other Hungarian cities.

AFTER STUDIES – SETTLEMENT OPTIONS

Third-country nationals can apply for permanent residency under National Permanent Residence Permit (NPRP) (Állandó tartózkodási kártya) in Hungary if you have lawfully lived at least 3 years in Hungary without being absent for 90 days every year.
